Day 11 - Sonic Leaves the Trail (April 19)

Thought Foot, Road Rash, I spent the night in a motel eating home made pesto that we cooked on our camp stoves outside the motel. Once we finished the pesto, we ate large pizzas. We are currently packing up and getting ready to get back on the trail.

Sonic, Sonic's mom, and Rocky are heading home today.

The terrain is a lot easier in NC than GA. We are going to start increasing our mileage. We have 60 miles before our next stop. We are expecting at least 15 mile days.

It was really great spending some time together. Papa Bear and I picked up Sonic Bear and the others at 4:10 at Rock Gap. Amazingly enough, the GPS got us to the exact spot we needed to meet. Unfortunately, my previous mapquest directions miscalculated the travel time so we didn't leave early enough to get there first. We wanted to be there when Sonic emerged from the woods. She was sitting on a log when we pulled into the parking lot. She was tired and a bit red from the sun.

I was told that Road Rash and Thought Foot would be with Rabbit and Sonic. It wasn't hard figuring out who was who. Road Rash has lots of tattoos and ear lobe disks. He is a free spirit and chain smoker. Thought Foot is the young intellectual who always seems to be reading his map and planning the next leg of the journey. Both men are great guys and fun to hang out with. I am very grateful that my daughter got a chance to meet such interesting people on the trail. Thought Foot wrote Sonic a very sweet parting note that we are going to laminate and save forever.

After Papa Bear and I greeted our Sonic Bear with hugs and kisses, everyone piled into my little sedan with their gear and we drove into Franklin to get a hotel. Places seem to fill up fast. We stayed at the Sapphire Inn and got the special hiker rate of $35 for the first person and $5 for each additional person. Accommodations were modest but pleasant. The manager even let us borrow a pot and collander to make pesto.

It was difficult to say goodbye the next morning. I know it will be a while before I see my brother again, and I probably will never see Road Rash and Thought Foot again. So it is on the trail...people meet, talk, and then part ways...sometimes forever.

By the way, Rabbit, this is an interesting camera angle. I noticed that you did not get any of your gear in the picture. Rabbit's mess...I mean gear, literally covered 1/2 of the hotel room floor.
